Lake Como Ferragosto Long Weekend

A four-day Ferragosto escape to Lake Como — villa gardens, ferry-hopping between Bellagio and Varenna, and a boat picnic on Italy's most cinematic lake, timed to the Aug 15 Assumption Day holiday.

Why this idea works

  • Ferry-hop the central lake between Bellagio, Varenna and Menaggio
  • Villa Carlotta and Villa del Balbianello gardens
  • A private or shared boat afternoon on the water for Ferragosto
  • Aperitivo with a lake view in Como's old town

Day-by-day itinerary

1

Day 1 — Fri, Aug 13

Arrive in Como, settle by the water

Train from Milan to Como San Giovanni (about 40 minutes). Drop bags, walk the lakefront promenade, ride the Como–Brunate funicular for a first panorama, then aperitivo in the old town as the light drops over the water.

2

Day 2 — Sat, Aug 14

Ferry to Bellagio and Varenna

Take the fast ferry up to Bellagio, the "pearl of the lake," for its stepped alleys and gardens. Cross to Varenna in the afternoon for Villa Monastero's terraced gardens and an early lakeside dinner before the Ferragosto weekend fills up.

3

Day 3 — Sun, Aug 15 (Ferragosto / Assumption Day)

Villa gardens and a boat afternoon

Beat the holiday crowds early at Villa Carlotta or Villa del Balbianello (book ahead — Ferragosto is peak). Spend the afternoon on the water with a shared or private boat and a picnic; many towns hold small Assumption Day processions and evening fireworks.

4

Day 4 — Mon, Aug 16

Menaggio and slow return

A relaxed morning in Menaggio on the quieter western shore, coffee on the square, then the ferry and train back to Milan (or onward). Bridge Mon–Fri, Aug 10–14 to wrap this into a full nine-day break.

Practical tips

Transport: Base yourself car-free — the ferries are the best way around the central lake, and parking is scarce over Ferragosto. Trains from Milan run frequently to Como and Varenna.

Stay area: Stay in Varenna or Bellagio for the prettiest base; Como town is cheaper and best for transport links.

Booking: Ferragosto (Aug 15) is the single busiest weekend of the Italian summer — lock in accommodation and any villa or boat tickets weeks ahead, and eat early.
